Speyburn Distillery

Distilled since 1897 in the world-renowned Speyside region of Scotland, Speyburn distillery embodies the generations of commitment, experience and tradition that go into producing award-winning single malt scotch whisky.

For generations, the Speyside region of Scotland has been known to contain some of the cleanest and most mineral rich waters in the world. This is what drew Hopkins to the area in search of the perfect place to found a distillery. After a long time hunting for the right spot, Hopkins finally discovered a secluded valley near a freshwater tributary of the River Spey. It was there he found the Granty Burn, an untouched hidden stream. He knew that the burn's exceptionally pure water would produce a remarkable whisky with a naturally refreshing character. It is here that he broke ground and founded the Speyburn Distillery, beginning his legacy.

Euan Henderson

Distillery Manager

Euan Henderson has been at the helm of Speyburn Distillery since May 2022, bringing with him all the experience and expertise of a career dedicated to Scotch whisky. Born in Aberdeen, he is the son of a Distillery Manager, and his family moved between Scotland’s whisky hotspots throughout his childhood, from Speyside to the Highlands and Islands. When the time came, there was never any question that Euan would follow in his father’s footsteps.

Euan took the reins at Speyburn Distillery at an exciting time, as this acclaimed Speyside single malt celebrated its 125th anniversary and planned for the opening of a new visitor experience for the first time in its history. He is relishing the chance to be part of such a tight-knit team and has already forged a reputation as a supportive, dynamic, hands-on leader with passion and respect for the great traditions of whisky making at this beautiful, storied Speyside distillery.

Sustainability at Speyburn Distillery

Water Stewardship

We have exceptionally efficient operations in place at Speyburn Distillery through a long-established partnership that began with CoRDe over 100 years ago (established in 1903). All Coproducts are processed at CoRDe and returned to the watercourse or converted to
animal feedstocks.

100% of spent lees and washing water is processed in CORDe plant and returned to river Spey. Pot ale is evaporated in CORDe plant to produce Pot Ale Syrup and 90% of water from pot ale is then returned to river Spey.

Energy Reduction

In 2015 Speyburn became one of the first distilleries in Scotland to invest in TVR in a drive to become more energy efficient, reducing emissions and improving our carbon footprint. TVR has delivered energy-saving on site resulting it being the most energy efficient site in the Group and instigating a roll out of TVR at other sites within the International Beverage group. TVR has resulted 30% reduction in energy use at site.

Co-products

We are developing innovative methods to recycle the co-products of our whisky distillation. Our aim is to reuse all co-products and reduce our water consumption.

We split the draff between animal feeds and power generation and all spent lees and washing water processed in CORDe plant and returned to river Spey. Pot ale is evaporated in CORDe plant to produce Pot Ale Syrup and 90% of water from pot ale is then returned to river Spey.

Seeing the abundant salmon and trout, he knew that the exceptionally pure water of this burn, rich in natural fortifying minerals, would produce a remarkably smooth whisky with a refreshing character.

Hopkins trusted his intuition and built the Speyburn distillery in the glen, using authentic river stones from the bed of the fast-flowing River Spey itself. Over 125 years after its founding, Speyburn remains the only distillery to use the pure, crystal-clear water of the Granty Burn.
